A candle for Diwali, without the cliché

The festival of light deserves better than a mass-market jar. A short guide to giving well.

Diwali is the one week a year when India buys candles by the crate, and most of them are forgettable by December. A luxury candle given at Diwali should do two things: be beautiful unlit on a shelf for a year, and mean something specific when it is finally lit.

The choice

For a household, Désir itself, sandalwood and pepper, is the safe and generous choice; sandalwood is already the smell of the festival. For a couple, Bacio di Fuoco: saffron is auspicious and the name says what you mean. For someone who has everything, the Grande in a mango-wood coffret, which is the gift that gets photographed.

The timing

Order by the first of October for India and by mid-November for Australia, where Diwali and the pre-Christmas window sit only weeks apart. Both ateliers pour to order in that month, and the Grande is made in numbers you can count on one hand.

A note on the card

Every Désir box has space for a line. Write the moment you want them to light it, not the occasion. "For the first cold night" is a better gift than "Happy Diwali".
